In a recent press conference held in Abuja on Friday, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun revealed that the force received intelligence about the involvement of foreign mercenaries in the upcoming nationwide protests.
News About Nigeria reports that the planned protest, which is scheduled to begin on August 1, is a response to the country’s economic challenges and is being led by young people.
The IGP urged Nigerians to exercise caution and reconsider participating in these demonstrations, citing potential risks.
Egbetokun stated that the police have been closely monitoring the situation and have identified various groups with differing approaches to the protests.
While some advocate for peaceful demonstrations, others have been calling for more aggressive actions, possibly inspired by recent events in Kenya.
He expressed concern that even some groups advocating for peaceful protests may have underlying violent intentions, casting doubt on their sincerity.
“We have a history of violent protests in Nigeria,” Egbetokun said, stating that the country does not need to look to other nations to understand the dangers of unchecked demonstrations.
He praised those who have chosen to withdraw from the protests, recognising the potential for violence and manipulation by those with ulterior motives.
The IGP mentioned that credible intelligence points to the involvement of foreign mercenaries in the planned protests, a development that raises serious security concerns.
He stressed the importance of vigilance among the public, urging them to reconsider joining any protest groups, given the risks involved.
He also urged organisers of the upcoming nationwide protest to provide essential details to their respective state commissioners to ensure a smooth and safe demonstration.
Egbetokun called for cooperation between the police and protesters to prevent any potential disruptions or violence.
“To facilitate a peaceful demonstration, Egbetokun requested that organisers provide information on the protest route, assembly point, duration, and leadership,” he said.
He also asked for measures to prevent criminal elements from hijacking the protest and causing trouble.
