The family of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has initiated a second autopsy to ascertain the cause of his death, News About Nigeria reports.
This follows a previous autopsy that suggested a potential drug reaction as a contributing factor.
Monisola Odumosu, one of the family’s lawyers, revealed that the second autopsy was conducted on July 19 and 20, under the supervision of Magistrate T.A. Shotobi.
The process involved a two-part examination, with provisions for further toxicology and histology tests if the initial findings were inconclusive.
“The second autopsy, requested by the Aloba family and ordered by Magistrate T.A. Shotobi, took place on July 19 and 20, 2024. This is a two-part process, and if the initial examination doesn’t reveal the cause of death, toxicology and histology tests will be conducted,” Odumosu stated.
The autopsy was observed by Joseph Aloba, Mohbad’s father, along with legal representatives and a pathologist appointed by Wunmi Aloba, Mohbad’s wife.
In June, a Coroner Court magistrate in Ikorodu, Lagos State, granted permission for Mohbad’s father to hire an independent pathologist for this purpose.
The singer’s death on September 12, 2023, at the age of 26, has remained controversial, with unclear circumstances surrounding the cause.
The initial autopsy conducted at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) indicated that Mohbad’s death might be linked to a drug reaction, specifically noting the presence of diphenhydramine, an antihistamine, in his system.
However, the concentration detected was not deemed fatal or lethal.
The autopsy also noted an injury on Mohbad’s right forearm and that his body was severely decomposed upon exhumation.
Diphenhydramine is commonly used to treat allergies, stomach ailments, cold symptoms, and anxiety.
