Gambaryan: Detained Binance Executive Brought To Court In Wheelchair

Tigran Gambaryan, the detained executive of Binance Holdings Limited, appeared at the Federal High Court in Abuja in a wheelchair on Tuesday.

His appearance in court in a wheelchair follows claims by Gambaryan’s lawyer that he is sick and needs urgent medical attention.

News About Nigeria reported that two lawmakers of the United States of America who visited the detained Binance executive in June had lamented his continuous detention despite his deteriorating health.

While listing his medical condition to include; malaria, double pneumonia, and weight loss, the lawmakers who claimed that Gambaryan is being denied access to adequate medical attention called for his immediate release on humanitarian grounds and proper medical attention.

Gambaryan, alongside Binance, is facing a money laundering charge levied against them by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Binance executive who came in a wheelchair appeared before the court dressed in a black T-shirt with blue jeans trousers.

When the matter was called, Gambaryan stood up from the wheelchair and walked slowly into the dock.

During the hearing, the EFCC lawyer, Ogechi Ujam, told the court that though the matter was scheduled for the continuation of trial, the commission’s lead counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, was not in court.

She therefore prayed the court to stand down the matter to enable Iheanacho to conduct the trial.

On their part, Gambaryan’s lawyer, Mark Mordi, and Babatunde Fagbohunlu, SAN, who appeared for Binance (1st defendant) did not oppose the application.

Following this, Justice Emeka Nwite stepped down the matter.
