The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated a disciplinary investigation into two operatives accused of assaulting a woman during a raid on a hotel in Lagos last week.
The commission announced this move in a press statement on Sunday, News About Nigeria reports.
The chairperson, Ola Olukoyede, has established a disciplinary panel to examine the conduct of the two officers involved in the incident at Regional Hotel, Ojo, Lagos, which occurred on Thursday.
According to the statement, signed by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, Olukoyede ordered the arrest of the officers and directed them to appear before a joint disciplinary team comprising the Appointment, Promotion, and Disciplinary Committee (APDC) and the Department of Ethics and Integrity.
The identities of the officers have not been disclosed.
The EFCC confirmed that the officers were captured on camera assaulting a woman during the operation at the Lagos hotel.
They are scheduled to appear before the disciplinary panel at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Monday, July 1.
The panel is tasked with investigating the allegations against the officers and recommending appropriate disciplinary actions.
Olukoyede stated that no effort would be spared in holding the officers accountable for their unprofessional conduct.
News About Nigeria reported that the EFCC chairman ordered the arrest of the officers involved in the assault, which was captured in a video clip that went viral on Thursday.
The video showed approximately five EFCC operatives breaking into a hotel room, with one officer repeatedly slapping a woman who was seated on the bed.
The woman did not resist or struggle with the operatives. The EFCC identified the woman as a staff member of the hotel.
Social media users shared various video clips depicting the EFCC operation, alleging that both hotel staff and guests were assaulted by the operatives.
After the brief altercation, the operatives escorted the woman out of the room, and two officers were seen inspecting the drawer of a table, with one picking up an unidentified object.
The EFCC stated that the raid led to the arrest of 117 suspected internet fraudsters at the hotel.
The operatives recovered items, including mobile phones, laptops, and four cars, from the suspects.
The EFCC assured that the suspects would be charged in court as soon as investigations were concluded.
