I Postponed My Play Date With Friends To Receive Scheduled Flogging - Layi Wasabi

Popular comedian, skit maker, and social media influencer Isaac Olayiwola, popularly known as Layi Wasabi, has recounted how he had to postpone playdates with his friends to receive a scheduled flogging from his uncle during his childhood, News About Nigeria reports.

The Content Creator, who is also called The Law, stated this while sharing a memorable childhood experience that sheds light on the disciplinary practices and educational expectations in some Nigerian households.

Speaking in an interview on the 90s Baby Show podcast released on Monday, Layi explained the circumstances that surrounded his funny experience, noting that it was not funny at that time.

Responding to the question of whether his next-door neighbour could beat him, Layi recounted how his uncle had travelled for over two hours to come flog him for failing physics, while in secondary school.

He stated that his mom always wanted him to study medicine or something in the sciences.

According to him, it had been mandatory in his school for students in Senior Secondary 1 (SS1) to study all courses before being placed according to their strengths.

He recounted how he had passed biology and chemistry but failed physics.

This upset his mother, who reached out to his uncle to come discipline him.

“I never had that but I had uncles flog me. I had one that travelled to flog me. It was like a 2-hour drive.

“My mom always wanted me to do medicine or something in the sciences.

“I passed biology and chemistry but I failed physics and I had stronger subjects in the art department, so it was recommended that I did Art.

“This outcome upset my mother, who felt I wasn’t taking my studies seriously enough. In response, she contacted one of my uncles, who promptly said, “Don’t worry, I’ll be in Oshogbo tomorrow.

“I was the one who opened the gate for him, and assisted him to carry his load from his car.”

“The situation turned serious when my uncle requested to see my report card. You failed physics and you didn’t do well in mathematics, lie down there. At that moment, I knew where my fate was then,” he stated.

In May, Layi Wasabi, celebrated for his distinctive humour and towering presence, secured his first Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) win in the Best Digital Content Creator category.
