Basketmouth Leverages Davido’s Wedding, Wizkid’s Shade To Promote Show

Nigerian comedian Basketmouth has cleverly used the buzz surrounding Davido’s wedding and the subtle shade purportedly thrown by Wizkid to promote his upcoming show in Montreal.

News About Nigeria reported that social media was set ablaze on Monday after Nigerian superstar Wizkid tweeted “Lol” shortly after fellow artiste Davido shared pre-wedding photos with his long-time partner, Chioma Rowland.

The timing of the tweet led many netizens to speculate that it was a reaction to Davido’s announcement, sparking mixed reactions online.

On Sunday evening, Davido and Chioma officially announced their wedding date, set for June 25, 2024.

The couple shared a series of stunning, traditional-themed photos on social media, tagged with the hashtag #CHIVIDO2024.

However, Wizkid’s cryptic “Lol” tweet, posted just hours after Davido’s announcement, stirred controversy.

While some criticised Wizkid for not offering congratulations and perceived his tweet as mockery, others praised his ability to generate buzz with a single, ambiguous tweet.

Reacting to the frenzy, Basketmouth humorously lamented that Davido’s wedding had overshadowed his promotional efforts for the Montreal show.

He suggested that even throwing shade, a reference to past tweets by Wizkid, wouldn’t be enough to compete for attention.

“Dear Hunter, I’m sorry I have not been able to promote the Montreal show this weekend. Davido’s wedding has taken over the social media space. Except you want us to start using #Chivido2024 to promote the show. Which I don’t think will work.

“Because, even Wizkid wey throw shade, nobody send am. I suggest we stop any form of promo until after the wedding. Nothing concern anybody with show for now. Davido you do this one o. Wishing you all the best bro. You con dey make marriage hungry me,” Basketmouth posted.

His post generated criticism from Wizkid’s fans, known as ‘Wizkid FC,’ who dragged him for mentioning Wizkid.

In a new post this morning, Basketmouth wrote, “Hunter, remember I told you this post is going to work? Clearly, Wizkid FC didn’t get it. I sha wish we let the ticket site stay a little bit longer. I think I should add a Wizkid song now, it might help balance things. By the way, let’s continue #Chivido2024. It’s working. So? Who’s next? How you reason Portable? You sure say Davido fans go like this song wey you dey play so? Dem no dey like that na.”
