Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has urged the government to reduce the cost of governance to combat poverty in the state, News About Nigeria reports.
Speaking to cabinet members and stakeholders, Governor Sani mentioned that 60% of Kaduna’s population lives below the poverty line, prompting him to reduce his and his cabinet members’ allowances.
According to him, he has been receiving half of his salary since he became the governor of Kaduna State.
“When we came in, we sat down and agreed that charity begins at home. We have to cut the cost of governance in Kaduna State, where at least 60% of the population is living below the poverty line,” said Governor Sani.
“I suggested to the Deputy Governor that we reduce these allowances because they are too much. We all agreed collectively, including myself, that my salary should be cut in half. So today, I’m receiving half of my salary since becoming governor of Kaduna State.”
Governor Sani also revealed changes in the usage of government vehicles and facilities.
He said that none of his cabinet members are driving new cars because he has told them to use the ones they inherited from the previous government.
“No commissioner, not even the Deputy Governor, is using a new car in Kaduna State. I told them to use the cars we inherited from the previous administration. Today, I’m using my personal cars as a governor, and that’s what we have been doing. It is not magic; it is cutting the cost of governance,” he stated.
