The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has joined Nigerians in commemorating 25 years of uninterrupted civilian rule while also acknowledging the challenges facing the country’s democracy.
News About Nigeria reports that this is contained in a statement signed by Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, Acting National Publicity Secretary.
The PRP congratulated Nigerians on the milestone but noted that the country’s democracy has not made significant progress in social democracy, civic rights, or material well-being.
The party cited the last general elections as a reminder of the challenges facing democracy in Nigeria, including monetisation, lack of transparency, and voter disenfranchisement.
The PRP called on civil society organisations, professional associations, and community groups to mobilise and demand better from leaders and institutions.
The party emphasised the need for a participatory, inclusive, and accountable democracy, urging Nigerians to promote a culture of transparency, accountability, and good governance.
The PRP honoured the sacrifices of heroes past and present who fought for freedom and rights and called for collective action to build a truly democratic Nigeria where power resides with the people.
Earlier on Wednesday, the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, also blamed the opposition parties for their inability to form a coalition to challenge the ruling party and articulate a plan for good governance.
He urged the opposition parties to forge a coalition to save Nigeria’s democracy, stating that their failure to do so is a major threat to the country’s democratic system.
Atiku commended Nigerians for their role in sustaining democracy in the country for the past 25 years.
Atiku acknowledged the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for the country’s transition from military to democratic rule.
He specifically mentioned Basorun MKO Abiola, his wife Kudirat, Shehu Yar’Adua, and Alfred Rewane, among others.
Atiku noted that the country has witnessed an uninterrupted season of electoral politics for 25 years.
