Eid al-Adha: Saudi Arabia Announces Moon Sighting

On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court called on Muslims across the Kingdom to join in the sighting of the crescent moon of the Arabic month, Dhu Al Hijjah tomorrow evening, Thursday.

According to the Supreme Court, the moon sighting exercise would help to determine the commencement of the new and last month of the Hijr and also the day the festival falls on the Islamic calendar.

News About Nigeria reports that Eid-Al-Adha, which is also known as Eid-el-Kabir and the biggest Islamic festival, falls on the 10th of Dhul Al Hijjah.

The “Festival of Sacrifice,” is celebrated in commemoration of the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, which is why Muslim faithfuls usually slaughter animals such as ram, sheep, goats, cows, or camels.

Speaking to the Muslim faithful, the court called on individuals who are observant to join in sighting the crescent moon, whether with the naked eye or through binoculars, to go to the nearest court and provide their testimony.

The court also added that the individuals will have to register their testimony by themselves or contact the nearest centre to help in reaching the nearest court.

The Supreme Court said, “The Supreme Court calls on all Muslims in Saudi Arabia to investigate the crescent of Dhu al-Hijjah tomorrow evening, Thursday, 29 Dhu al-Qadah 1445 H, corresponding to June 6, 2024. The sighting of the crescent will confirm the days of Hajj, including the Day of Arafah and Eid al-Adha.

“If Friday, June 7, is confirmed as the first day of Dhu Al Hijjah, Eid al-Adha will fall on Sunday, June 16,” it added.
