Budget Padding Claim: Senate Pardons, Recalls Ningi From Suspension

The Senator representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, Senator Abdul Ningi, resumed plenary on Tuesday after a three month suspension, News About Nigeria reports.

The senator’s suspension which began on March 12, ended in June, and the Senator was recalled and allowed to resume plenary on Tuesday.

Recall that the Senator was suspended following his controversial interview on budget padding, where he alleged that there were discrepancies in the 2024 budget, claiming that the National Assembly approved N25 trillion while the Presidency implemented N28.7 trillion.

However, a motion for the recalling of the senator was moved last week by the deputy minority leader, Senator Abba Moro, where he expressed regret on Ningi’s behalf and took responsibility for his actions.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, subsequently announced Ningi’s unconditional recall after pleas from some lawmakers.

Recall that the Senate had earlier said that its president, Godswill Akpabio, has no power to recall suspended Senator Abdul Ningi, adding that only the 108 lawmakers can do so.

The senate spokesman, Yemi Adaramodu, while speaking to newsmen on Monday before plenary, stated that Ningi offended the senate, and his suspension was a disciplinary action taken against him by the entire lawmakers.

“There was an infraction occasioned by the actions of our respected colleague Senator Abdul Ningi, which made the senate in an open public session, where he was allowed to defend himself and for senators to talk on it, debated on it, then at the end of the day it was found that an infraction had occurred.

“And 109 senators except Senator Ningi now decided that Senator Ningi would be given a light disciplinary declaration which gave him a three month suspension from parliamentary activities.

“So, it is only the 108 senators that took that action that can call Senator Ningi back,” he stated.
