The Secretary to the Federal Government (SGF), George Akume, has urged the newly appointed Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, to prioritise the safety of lives and properties of road users across Nigeria.
News About Nigeria reports that Akume made this charge on Tuesday, May 28, in Abuja, during the official decoration ceremony of the new Corps Marshal.
Addressing the gathering, Akume stressed the critical nature of Mohammed’s new role.
Akume further expressed confidence in the FRSC’s track record.
Shehu Mohammed, who previously served as a zonal commanding officer in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was appointed as the new Corps Marshal last week.
In related developments, the Federal Road Safety Corps has reported the production of 3,563,759 number plates for motor vehicles and motorcycles between 2020 and 2022.
This data was revealed in the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) 2023 Social Statistics Report, which analysed socio-economic trends in Nigeria during this period.
The report announced that 2,161,782 number plates were produced for motor vehicles and 1,066,377 for motorcycles over the three-year span.
Specifically, the FRSC produced 653,330 number plates for motor vehicles in 2020, 767,927 in 2021, and 740,525 in 2022.
For motorcycles, the figures were 335,600 in 2020, 386,249 in 2021, and 344,528 in 2022.
The peak year for number plate production was 2021, with a total of 1,154,176 plates produced for both motor vehicles and motorcycles.
Additionally, the report revealed that 534,496 drivers’ licences were processed in 2020, 828,189 in 2021, and 1,007,948 in 2022.
This data shows that 2022 saw the highest number of drivers’ licences processed within the three-year period.
Cumulatively, the total number of drivers’ licences processed by the FRSC over these three years amounts to 2,370,633.
