Ex-CJN Calls For Reforms To Tackle Supreme Court Case Backlog

On Wednesday, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, summoned the Chief Judges of the Federal High Court and the Kano State High Court in response to their recent judgement in the ongoing Kano Emirate tussle.

News About Nigeria gathered that the CJN invited the judges because of the conflicting interim injunctions by the two courts, which led to the breakdown of law and order in Kano State.

In his summons to the judges on Wednesday, the CJN kicked against the conflicting judgements of the court, adding that the judges are meant to adhere to the constitution in giving judgement on any matter.

Ariwoola also tasked the judges with the need for “judicial coordination and the necessity for the judiciary to present a unified front, particularly in cases of substantial public interest.”

The CJN further noted that his, “upcoming meeting with the chief judges aims to clarify jurisdictional boundaries and prevent future occurrences of conflicting judicial orders. The situation in Kano has garnered national attention, with many stakeholders calling for a swift resolution following the state government’s decision to sack Emir Ado Bayero and reinstate Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II.”

Recall that there has been tension in Kano state following the amendment of the Emirate Law, which led to the dethronement of Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano.

Following Bayero’s removal, the Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf-led Kano government reinstalled Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, who was removed by the former administration of former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, as the Emir of Kano.
