In a recent interview with BET, popular singer Tiwa Savage revealed why some of her old music videos were not aired on television, News About Nigeria reports.
According to the ‘Wanted’ singer, her music videos were considered too risqué for television, and she was prohibited from performing at concerts due to her outfit choices.
“When I first moved back, I would turn up at a show, and they would say I can’t perform because my outfit was too risqué,” Savage revealed.
“Even some of my first music videos were not played on television because they were considered indecent. I wasn’t even wearing bikinis.”
She mentioned that she didn’t pay attention to the online criticism as she continued to express herself through her music and style.
“Despite the setbacks, I was still stubborn. My dresses were getting more revealing. It was just getting worse. They were bashing me online,” she said.
According to the mother of one, her persistence paid off as her fanbase continued to grow, leading to increased demand for her music and performances.
She also mentioned that fans constantly pit her against other female artists, thereby, instigating unnecessary rivalry.
Savage revealed that fans often position her against every emerging female artist, claiming that these newcomers were there to take her ‘throne’.
However, instead of engaging in these rivalries, Savage said she goes out of her way to make friends with them.
She said, “Fans always try to pit me against other female artists. Any new female artist that comes up, they would be like, ‘Yo, she is coming to take her throne.’
“And I would go out of my way to make friends with them [new female artists] because it is not a competition. The real competition are the male artists. I was happy that Tyla, a female artists won the maiden Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys over the male nominees.”
