Lagos-Calabar Highway: Tinubu Arrives Lagos Ahead Of Inauguration

On Saturday, President Bola Tinubu arrived in Lagos ahead of the inauguration of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, which is slated for tomorrow, Sunday, May 26, 2024.

The President’s arrival was disclosed by his Special Assistant on Saturday, Dada Olusegun, in a post on his official X handle.

He wrote, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrives in Lagos ahead of the flag off of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.”

News About Nigeria reported that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, had earlier announced that the President would inaugurate the highway on Sunday, following a stakeholders’ meeting where he addressed concerns related to compensation and environmental impact.

According to the federal government, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will connect Nigeria’s economic hub to the nation’s eastern coast.

Recall that the inauguration of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is coming even though it has been kicked against by many Nigerians, including the Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, Atiku Abubakar, and his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Peter Obi.

The opposition believes that the FG should focus on other pressing national issues like the current economic challenges instead of constructing the 700-kilometre Coastal Highway, which the FG has estimated would cost N15 trillion, as a kilometre of the road will cost N4 billion.

They had also tasked the Tinubu-led government with focusing on the rehabilitation of federal roads in the country, instead of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project

However, the Minister of Works, together with the FG, have insisted that despite the backlash from Nigerians, the Coastal Highway project is a development that will outlive the President Tinubu-led administration.
