Court Convicts Medical Doctor, Dr. Anuoluwapo Adepoju, Over Failed Plastic Surgery

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State has convicted Dr. Anuoluwapo Adepoju, a medical doctor and founder of MedContour Services Ltd., over a failed plastic surgery that resulted in the death of Nneka Onwuzuligbo in 2020.

News About Nigeria reports that the development was disclosed in a tweet by Babatunde Irukera, a former Director-General of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), on Friday, May 17,

According to Irukera, Dr. Adepoju was found guilty on all five counts charged by the FCCPC.

TundeIrukera, wrote: “Today is a day of pride for me that I personally prosecuted Anu Adepoju and her medical practice. Though I’ve left, the case has ended in a conviction strengthening the accountability framework for all in society, professionals or otherwise. This is how society should work and grow.

“Dr. Anu Adepoju and her medical practice convicted in all 5 counts charged by FCCPC. The wheel of justice may grind slowly, but we must see it through. What we need are enforced with audacity and the will to prosecute competently and diligently. Good day for consumers of professional services.”

Irukera, who personally prosecuted the case, expressed pride in the conviction, stating that it strengthens the accountability framework for professionals and individuals in society.

The FCCPC had arraigned Dr. Adepoju in 2020 on five counts, including refusal to honour an invitation for investigation into post-body surgery complications and failure to produce investigation documents.

The prosecuting counsel told the court that shunning a summons by the commission is a criminal offence, punishable by a prison term or fine or both.

Dr. Adepoju and her firm, MedContour Services Ltd., were accused of blocking an investigation into customers’ complaints, including allegations of unsafe services and false representation in marketing. The commission received complaints from several individuals, including Marlene Oluwakemi, Taiwo Temilade, and Vivian Onwuzuligbo.
