Another aircraft, Xejet on Saturday, skidded off the runway of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Confirming the incident, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, said the aircraft was arriving from Abuja to Lagos when it skidded off the runway.
The NSIB further revealed that the aircraft, with registration 5N-BZZ, had 52 passengers on board.
It further disclosed that when the incident happened, fire and rescue team were on the ground to help all 52 passengers.
NSIB said, “An aircraft belonging to XeJet Airline skidded off the runway at the domestic wing of Murtala Mohammed Airport this morning. A go team has been deployed to the site of the incident.”
Also, following the incident which happened today (Saturday) at around 11:29 AM, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has shut the Runway 18L of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
According to FAAN, this is to allow for proper investigation into the incident and to ensure that there is no repetition of such.
News About Nigeria recalls that similar incident happened in April to one of Dana airline’s fleet, Dana MD-82 aircraft, which was involved in a runway excursion, also skidded on the runway of the Lagos International Airport.
Following the incident, the minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, ordered the suspension of the carrier for a comprehensive auditing.
According to Keyamo, this is because he does not want a repetition of such and is against the shedding of the innocent blood.
“The last thing I want to happen to me as Aviation Minister is to have blood on my hands. I mean the blood of innocent Nigerians caused by negligence or deep complicity of those who are supposed to be regulators of the aviation industry. As minister, my job is to supervise them, and to ensure they carry out their duties. My job is not to regulate,” Keyamo said.
