On Wednesday, the House of Representatives resolved to investigate the escape of Nadeem Anjarwalla, the head of Binance Africa, from custody.
The lawmakers decided on the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance moved by Hon. Dennis Okafor during plenary in Abuja.
In his prayers, Okafor asked the relevant committees of the House to embark on a proper investigation and prosecute those responsible for the escape of the Binance executive from detention.
The resolution by the House of Representatives to probe his escape comes less than 24 hours after Binance CEO Richard Teng accused some lawmakers of demanding bribes from his employees during a meeting in January.
Teng had alleged that, following their refusal to give in to the demand for a bribe, the Nigerian government decided to come after the company with various allegations and the subsequent detention of two of its employees.
News About Nigeria reported that the 38-year-old Binance executive escaped custody on March 22 from an Abuja guest house where he and his colleague, Tigran Gambaryan, were detained after guards on duty led him to a nearby mosque for prayers in the spirit of the Ramadan fast.
A preliminary investigation after his escape showed that the Binance executive had fled to Kenya.
He was, however, arrested by men of the Kenyan Police Force and would be extradited to Nigeria for the tax evasion and money laundering allegations against him, his colleague, and their cryptocurrency platform.
Anjarwalla and his colleague were said to have been arrested immediately after they arrived in Nigeria in February 2024.
