The Federal government has said that it will commence the payment of compensation to deserving property owners affected by the construction of the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway today, May 1, 2024.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Works, David Umahi on Tuesday when he spoke with newsmen at Landmark Beach in Lagos.
According to the minister, the compensation would be paid to property owners on the gazetted federal government right-of-way.
The minister further noted that the federal government would make use of the old rate of compensation in paying the owners of properties affected.
Umahi also explained that the FG is beginning the payment today in order to fulfil it’s promise to the people since demolition commenced last week Saturday.
He further reiterated the fact that though the 700-km Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project has faced several backlash from Nigerians, it is a development that will outlive the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.
News About Nigeria reported that the FG estimated that the 700 km Lagos-Calabar coastal road will be constructed for N15 trillion, and a kilometre of the road will cost N4 billion.
Also, Umahi revealed that solar cameras would be installed on the Third Mainland Bridge by June.
While revealing that the FG is working on the Third Mainland Bridge and other bridges, the Minister revealed that, CCTV and observation room to monitor the activity of illegal miners in the state even as he added that this would also check speed limits on the Third Mainland Bridge.
“We are working on a number of bridges inherited, we inherited construction works at Eko Bridge, Marina Bridge, Liverpool bridge all done by Build well,” the Minister stated.
