The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is advocating that drivers responsible for road accidents be jailed without any option of fine, News About Nigeria reports.
The suggestion was made by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, at a press conference held today (Wednesday) in Abuja.
Biu made the suggestion in the light of recent tragic road accidents that have happened in various parts of the country.
He further charged state governors to punish any driver caught violating road laws or who is responsible for any accident.
Biu also noted that reckless drivers deserve no fine as they usually cause the death of many innocent Nigerians with their poor driving.
Biu said, “We have written to all state governors to help prosecute drivers that are causing road crashes. We have received a letter from the Kaduna State government of its commitment to prosecute these drivers. We hope that other states will follow suit in directing their commissioners of justice or police so that the drivers who indulge or violate road rules are prosecuted.
“In fact, we are advocating for a jail term without an option of fine so that by the time we have 50 jailed drivers, everyone will take caution. It is a collective effort.”
The FRSC Corps Marshal further revealed that, together with the judiciary across all 36 states, they are working to expedite the trial of drivers involved in road accidents.
He also added that all offenders will face legal consequences that will help in dissuading other drivers from driving recklessly in the country.
Biu explained that the move is part of FRSC’s commitment to ensuring that the roads are safe for users.
