Tunde Onakoya, the founder of Chess-in-Slums, returned to Nigeria to a hero’s welcome after successfully breaking the Guinness World Record in New York, USA.
News About Nigeria reported that Onakoya embarked on his mission to break the chess marathon record of 56 hours, nine minutes, and 37 seconds set by Norwegians Hallvard Haug Flatebo and Sjur Ferkingstad in 2018.
Partnering with American chess champion Shawn Martinez, Onakoya began his attempt on April 17, 2024, at New York City’s iconic Times Square.
His goal was not only to break the record but also to raise funds and awareness for providing educational opportunities to underprivileged children across Africa.
After an intense 56-hour marathon, Onakoya achieved his mission. The Gift of Chess on X announced the milestone at 12:34 am last Saturday, declaring, “56 Hours Straight. The Record Is SET TO BREAK.”
Upon his return to Nigeria on Wednesday, Onakoya received a heartwarming welcome at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos.
Supporters and fans gathered to celebrate his remarkable achievement, greeting him with singing and dancing.
