The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, has made a visit to Lead British International School in Abuja following the emergence of multiple videos showing a student being bullied by colleagues, News About Nigeria reports.
Accompanied by officials from her ministry, Minister Kennedy-Ohaneye’s visit to the school comes in response to the distressing footage that circulated on social media platforms on Tuesday.
During the visit, it was observed that one of the alleged bullies, a female student, was brought to the school by two elderly women, presumably family members or guardians.
The video showed a student, identified as Namtira Bwala, being physically assaulted by her classmates within the school premises.
In one of the videos shared, Bwala was subjected to 18 slaps by another female student while repeatedly being asked, “Who broke my heart?” Another clip showed her being beaten in one of the school’s empty halls.
Responding to the public outcry, Lead British School Abuja issued a statement addressing the incident.
The school expressed deep concern over the matter and assured the public that they were taking immediate steps to address it.
According to the school’s statement, they are collaborating with the perpetrators and their families to address the behaviour through counselling and disciplinary measures.
Additionally, they have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident, reviewing footage and interviewing witnesses to ensure appropriate action is taken.
The school has pledged its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and maintaining a conducive learning environment free from harassment and violence.
“We want to reassure our school community and the public that we are taking all necessary steps to address this isolated incident and prevent a recurrence. We are committed to fostering a culture of kindness, respect, and empathy at Lead British International School Abuja, where every student feels safe, valued, and respected,” the statement read.
