FCCPC Raids Chinese Supermarket For Alleged Discriminatory Practices

Following widespread condemnation and public outrage, the Abuja-based Chinese supermarket accused of refusing entry to Nigerians has been shut down, News About Nigeria reports.

A correspondent from the publication visited the premises on Monday at 9:10 am and observed that the grocery store was closed, with an anti-theft padlock securing the entrance. The closure comes in the wake of backlash against the management for implementing a discriminatory policy.

Situated at the China General Chamber of Commerce along Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Road in the Federal Capital Territory, the supermarket was previously acclaimed as a destination for Chinese cuisine and beverages. However, reports emerged that entry into the facility was restricted exclusively to individuals of Chinese descent, sparking outrage among Nigerians.

Expressing discontent about the discriminatory policy, a resident of the FCT lamented the situation, confirming that only Chinese nationals were allowed entry into the supermarket. The resident highlighted the absurdity of the situation, questioning whether such restrictions would be tolerated in China.

“Wonders shall never end. There is a supermarket I saw online that is a Chinese supermarket. They have Chinese food, ramen, and other things. I wanted to go there and check it out but I was denied entry. The security officers at the gate said the supermarket was strictly for Chinese people and no Nigerian is allowed to go inside or buy anything. Is that possible in China?” the resident exclaimed.

The discriminatory practice sparked a wave of condemnation on social media, with many Nigerians expressing shock and disbelief. Some individuals corroborated the story on various platforms, while others visited the supermarket to confirm the situation firsthand.
