“It Is Not A Do Or Die” – Damagun Speaks On Power Struggle In PDP

The details of the Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja have emerged.

News About Nigeria reports that the meeting preceded the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party.

The party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, and the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, were among the personalities present at the NEC meeting.

The party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), in its meeting, voiced concerns over the prolonged tenure of Ambassador Umar Damagum as the acting National Chairman, deviating from the party’s usual practice.

During the 77th board meeting, chaired by Senator Adolphus Wabara, the board said the former National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, vacated his position a year ago.

Traditionally, the region of the outgoing officer nominates a successor to complete the tenure, it said.

Senator Wabara also addressed the controversy surrounding the National Secretary’s office, which has caused internal conflict within the party.

Last year, PDP South East stakeholders nominated Sunday Ude-Okoye to fill the remainder of Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s term.

However, Ude-Okoye wasn’t sworn in, leading to legal disputes over the position.

Wabara said, “The ambiguity surrounding this position has led to confusion and internal strife, hindering our collective efforts to pursue our noble objectives.”

He stressed that the party’s constitution provides solutions to these challenges, but legal battles have hindered their implementation.

He added, “The forthcoming congresses at various levels serve as a beacon of hope, offering us a platform to reaffirm our commitment to democratic ideals, grassroots participation, and inclusive governance.

“Let us seize this moment to embrace change, foster unity, and chart a course towards a brighter and more prosperous future for our party and our nation.”

Wabara called on party leaders to embrace change, promote unity, and steer the PDP towards a brighter future.
