President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, has announced the designation of April 7 as National Police Day during the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and commendation ceremony in Abuja on Monday, News About Nigeria reports.
To modernise, professionalise, and make the police force more accountable, Tinubu said his administration is dedicated to a thorough revision of the institutional mindset and memory of police officers.
The President stated that his administration has carried out extensive reforms to revive the police force since taking office in 2023.
He stressed the importance of conducting more training sessions and capacity-building lectures for police personnel.
The President disclosed that the federal government has sanctioned the first week of April as police week, with April 7th marked as National Police Day in Nigeria.
Tinubu expressed appreciation for the dedication and valour of the police force, acknowledging their role as the guardians of the nation.
“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in our tradition of honouring the police force in the life of this great nation, we have approved the adoption of the first week of April as police week.
“Furthermore, the last day of the week, April 7th, is hereby declared National Police Day in Nigeria.”
He stressed the need to give the police a human face and maintained that the government would equip the force with modernised tools and technology to increase productivity.
“My administration will ensure that police officers are equipped with the knowledge, skills, values, and expertise required to tackle the complex challenges of modern policing,” President Tinubu said.
“This includes acquiring fit-for-purpose equipment, weapons, ammunition, and armoured carriers to provide cover and protection for officers in combat situations.”
He further pledged support for measures to improve the status of police officers during service and after retirement.
