On Wednesday, the lawyers of the detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, threatened to withdraw from the ongoing terrorism trial against him, News About Nigeria reports.
The decision, according to Kanu lawyers, is because the Department of State Services (DSS) has refused to grant them full access to Kanu.
Speaking on the impact of the access denial, Kanu’s lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, said it would be difficult for Kanu to adequately prepare for his defence in the case of terrorism charges levelled against him by the federal government.
While addressing newsmen in Abuja, Alloy said, “We will not participate in the assassination of justice in a Nigerian court over the head of Nnamdi Kanu. We will refuse to be part of the programmed injustice.”
He further noted that the Federal Government has been illegal in the case from the onset, citing how they connived with the Kenyan government to “kidnap” Kanu back to Nigeria.
Alloy added that unless Nigeria frees itself from crime and injustice, it will continue to be a criminal country.
“If Nigeria were a human being, she would have been sent to prison for committing the heinous crime. FG sent people to Kenya to kidnap Kanu; these people should be arrested and punished. Unless Nigeria frees itself from the crime of Kanu kidnapping, it will remain a criminal country.”
He further stated that Kanu never committed a crime, adding that all he ever did was lead a movement that wanted better, so, there is no justification for the unnecessary suffering and “persecution by the Nigerian government.”
