Following the fire that gutted a two-storey building at Dosunmu Market in the Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State, the state government has directed the closure of the market.
The fire is said to have started due to the poor repair of a generator in the market.
News About Nigeria reports that today’s fire outbreak is coming barely three weeks after four buildings were destroyed by an inferno at the same market.
Today’s fire which started at noon caused the collapse of two buildings and lasted till evening as fire service deployed all efforts to stop the fire.
In response to the fire outbreak, the Lagos State Government directed the suspension of commercial activities at Dosumu Street and its environs, noting that it was to avoid a repetition of such an occurrence.
The Special Adviser to the State Governor on Central Business Distress, CBD, Mrs. Bola Olumegbon Lawal, made the announcement when she led a delegation to the scene for the spot assessment of the situation.
Lawal further noted that the measure was necessary to restore and maintain peace and order in the area.
She also tasked the market women and men to abide by the decision of the state government, noting that it was for their good.
Lawal noted that aside from Dosunmu Market, the Lagos state government was also closing other markets, including Nnamdi Azikiwe Market, Moshalashi, Woro Pedro, and Obanikoro Streets.
Others listed are: Ago Tawa, Idumagbo Avenue, Idumagbo , Ido-Oluwo, and Oju Olobun Streets.
