At least 60 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives are considering leaving the party if acting National Chairman, Umar Ililya Damagum, does not step down immediately.
The injunction was made known by Honourable Ugochinyere Ikenga, along with five other lawmakers, during a press briefing at the National Assembly on Monday, News About Nigeria reports.
They insist that Damagum’s resignation should pave the way for a replacement from the North Central, as outlined in the party’s constitution.
The lawmakers accused Damagum of effectively handing over the PDP’s leadership to the rival All Progressives Congress (APC).
Damagum was also accused of betraying the party’s interests for personal gain.
According to them, Damagum’s departure is essential to prevent further harm to the PDP. They warned of their intention to defect to other political parties if their demands were not met.
This comes after reports last November that many PDP governors wanted Damagum removed.
These governors include Bala Mohammed (Bauchi); Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers); Ademola Adeleke (Osun); Godwin Obaseki (Edo); Sheriff Orohwedor (Delta); and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara).
Others are Douye Diri (Bayelsa); Kefas Agbu (Taraba); Amadu Fintri (Adamawa); Peter Mbah (Enugu); Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau); and Seyi Makinde (Oyo).
A source who is a member of the party’s National Executive Committee and close to some of the governors said, “They are not interested in confirming Damagum as the PDP substantive National Chairman.”
Damagum assumed the role of acting National Chairman in March 2023 following a legal dispute that led to the suspension of Senator Iyorchia Ayu from the same position.
The PDP is scheduled to have its NEC meeting on April 18. The North- Central is expected to present its anointed candidate for the position of the party’s national chairman to the NEC on this date.
