Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan clinched the gold medal in the women’s 100-meter hurdles event at the 2024 African Games held in Ghana, News About Nigeria reports.
The competition took place at the University of Ghana stadium in Accra, where Amusan showcased her speed and agility, crossing the finish line in an impressive 12.89 seconds.
Mozambique’s Sidoane Fiadanantsoaso secured the silver medal, while Ashley Tinashe of Zimbabwe claimed the bronze.
The 26-year-old athlete experienced a false start, however, officials decided not to disqualify her but instead issued a yellow card.
This win marked Amusan’s third consecutive gold medal at the African Games, having previously triumphed in the 2015 edition in Brazzaville and the 2019 edition in Rabat.
Amusan’s outstanding performance in Accra follows her remarkable achievement earlier in the season when she set a new African record in the women’s indoor 60-meter hurdles.
In the men’s 400-meter race, Nigerian athlete Chidi Okezie secured the gold medal with an impressive time of 45.06 seconds.
Samukonga Muzala of Zambia claimed the silver medal, while Diouf Tidiane of Senegal took home the bronze.
Okezie’s gold medal marks an improvement from his performance in the 2019 African Games in Rabat, where he won the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, in the women’s 400-meter race, Joseph Esther secured the silver medal for Nigeria.
She was narrowly beaten to the gold by Mari Moraa of Kenya, who clocked a time of 50.57 seconds.
In 2021, Amusan became the first Nigerian athlete to win a Diamond League title as she took the 100 m hurdles trophy, breaking the then-African record held by Glory Alozie in the process.] She retained her title in 2022 and 2023.
