Following a brief but widespread outage, social media giants Facebook and Instagram have now restored their services to users across the globe.
News About Nigeria reported that users had earlier reported difficulties accessing their accounts on both platforms, with login issues and an inability to refresh profiles.
The outage sparked frustration among users, prompting them to use other social media platforms to complain.
Many users took to Twitter to express their concerns and share their experiences during the temporary shutdown.
One Twitter user, Peace Ighodaro (@peace_igho), lamented the sudden log-out from Facebook, while Lidia Curanaj (@LidiaNews), a New York-based user, simply stated, “Facebook and Instagram down.” Social media influencer @RealRazziebinx from the Philippines even jokingly questioned if the world was ending.
Tech tycoon Elon Musk, who owns the alternative social media platform X, seized the moment to troll his rival.
Musk posted on X, “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working,” and later subtweeted, “We know why you’re all here rn.”
The outage comes on the heels of a similar incident in October 2021, when Meta, then known as Facebook, experienced a prolonged service disruption that lasted approximately six hours.
During that time, Facebook, Instagram, and other affiliated apps were affected.
A Meta executive attributed the problem to a “faulty configuration change” in the backbone routers coordinating network traffic.
As of now, both Facebook and Instagram have successfully restored their servers.
Users are advised to open the respective apps and log in with their details to regain access to their accounts.
