Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has appealed to the Federal Government not to scrape the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), News About Nigeria reports.
He made this appeal while speaking to newsmen in Maiduguri on Thursday, stating that the merging of the government’s decision to merge the Nigerian Army University Biu, Borno State, with the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, as recommended by the Oronsaye Report, will have an adverse effect on the country’s security.
He noted that the university remains of great importance to the people of Borno State, as lots of children in the state have been denied access to education due to security crisis for the past 15 years.
“We are all aware that Boko Haram’s primary mission is to truncate western education. Collapsing the Army University as a faculty within the NDA is like helping the insurgents achieve their objectives.
“Borno State has been facing a serious crisis for the last 15 years and as a result of this, many of our children could not have access to education. Therefore, this university is crucial to the people of Borno State and the entire North-East.
“If possible, the Federal Government should allow it to function as an Army university, considering the importance of education in this part of the country,” he said.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for the adoption and implementation of the Oronsaye Report, stating that it is timely and long overdue.
He added that it will play an important role in the government’s plan to reposition the economy and block leakages.
He, however, appealed to President Tinubu to rescind the decision to merge the Army University, Biu, with the Nigerian Defence Academy.
