Gas Important In Nigeria's Energy Transition - Verheijen

The Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Mrs. Olu Arowolo Verheijen, has stated that gas is important in Nigeria’s energy transition, News About Nigeria reports.

She said this while speaking at the Day 2 plenary session of the ongoing Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES), 2024, in Abuja.

She noted that trying to transition from gas to solar in the country is not an easy feat, as the cost of solar, either grid-scale solar or alternative sources of energy, is still twice or three times the cost of gas.

According to her, gas plays a strong role in the energy transition, not only domestically or regionally but also globally.

She further noted that the importance of energy in Nigeria cannot be overemphasised as it is used in various ways, including, domestic uses, industrialisation, and gas to power, among others.

“Nigeria has a significant role to play in the global energy markets, in not only meeting energy security to address energy security at home, as well as on the continent, but also in making sure we’re doing so sustainably and that this is affordable.

“This includes the use of energy in meeting various end uses to power our industrialization, to literally gas to power the value chain, or even in domestic uses.

“In addition to making sure that initiatives like gas flare commercialization (programme), carbon capture utilisation, and storage are used to continue to decarbonise our oil and gas operations as we grow production,” she said.

Verheijen, however, assured Nigerians that Bola Tinubu’s administration would continue to explore ways to improve the country’s business climate to attract more investments into the gas and energy sectors.
