The Kano State Government has denied any involvement in the ongoing legal proceedings against Murja Kunya, a TikToker facing trial for allegedly sharing inappropriate video content.
News About Nigeria gathered that the content shared by Kunya is said to violate relevant laws in the state.
Kunya, known for her support of the current administration, was recently arrested and arraigned by Hisbah, the state’s Sharia law enforcement agency, for allegedly recruiting young girls into prostitution.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, the Kano State Government refuted the claims circulating on social media platforms, declaring them untrue and mischievous.
“The state government is quite aware of the constitutional provisions for separation of powers and demarcation of responsibilities between the judiciary, legislature, and executive as the three arms of government and will never do anything or engage in any act that will jeopardise or undermine this noble provision,” stated Dantiye.
He further clarified that the government acknowledges the matter as purely legal, falling within the jurisdiction of the judiciary.
Dantiye assured that the government would not interfere in any manner that could influence the outcome of the case.
Regarding the charges against Murja Kunya, Dantiye said that she was arraigned before an Upper Shari’ah Court at Kwanar Hudu in the Nassarawa Local Government area.
The court ordered her remand in a correctional centre and scheduled a further hearing for Tuesday, February 20, 2024, after considering her bail application.
Dantiye revealed that there were additional allegations against Kunya, leading to her investigation by security agencies.
He urged the public to dismiss the allegations against the state government as an attempt to tarnish its image.
“The general public is hereby urged to disregard the mischievous allegation against the state government as nothing but a misguided attempt to tarnish its good image and reputation while assuring the good people of the state that it will continue to respect and uphold the sanctity of the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
