Supplementary Budget To Cover New Minimum Wage – FG

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) appealed on Saturday to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to not embark on their planned nationwide strike in the interest of the nation.

The National President of the Student Body, Pedro Obi, appealed at a news conference that was held in Abeokuta today.

News About Nigeria recalls that the NLC and TUC issued a 14-day nationwide strike notice to the government on Thursday over failure to meet the terms of their agreement.

According to the labour unions, the FG has failed to meet all their demands which it initially agreed to settle.

In his plea to the NLC and TUC, the NANS president noted that embarking on a nationwide strike in the face of the current economic realities that Nigerians are facing would not help in any way.

He further stated that the strike would, at the end of the day, increase the hardship and economic crisis in the country.

He therefore pleaded with them not to embark on the planned strike, as they could still demand that the right thing be done without striking.

In his own words, “A strike, though a powerful tool, can lead to civil unrest and further worsen the security and economic situation of the country.

“We believe that constructive dialogue and engagement can lead to mutually beneficial solutions without causing nationwide unrest.”

The student union therefore charged the labor unions to continue to embrace dialogue and negotiation with the relevant government authorities so as to have their needs met.
