Police To Investigate Killing Of Two Akwa Ibom Clerics

The Gombe State Police Command has debunked rumours that there are security threats in the state and that bandits have entered the state, News About Nigeria reports.

The State Police Commissioner, Hayatu Usman, in a statement issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mahid Abubakar, on Friday, described the claims as false and unsubstantiated.

Recall that the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Muhammad Bello, had on Tuesday, during the decoration of 302 officers, warned residents against accommodating strangers or their agents, stating that the criminals were migrating from the north-west to the north-east.

Reacting to this claim, Usman maintained that it was a mere rumour and that the state was not under any security threat whatsoever.

“The command wishes to state emphatically that there is no such threat in Gombe State, and the command, in collaboration with other security agencies, is committed to ensuring the protection of lives and property and the maintenance of law and order in the state,” the statement reads in part.

He therefore urged residents to ignore such messages aimed at causing fear and disquiet and go about their lawful businesses as usual.

He also assured the people that the command would continue to work to ensure that they and their properties were kept safe from harm or destruction.

He further appealed to them to report any suspicious movement and bring credible information that would help to maintain peaceful coexistence in the state.

“The public is enjoined to report any suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police stations.” He added.
