Supplementary Budget To Cover New Minimum Wage – FG

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have jointly issued a 14-day nationwide strike notice to the Federal Government, News About Nigeria reports.

This move comes in response to the alleged failure of the Bola Tinubu-led government to implement agreements reached on October 2, 2023, particularly concerning the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol.

Leaders of both labour unions expressed disappointment with the government’s inaction, despite efforts to ensure industrial peace.

The October 2 agreement was to address the suffering and socioeconomic consequences arising from the increase in the price of PMS and the devaluation of the naira, policies influenced by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.

In a joint statement issued on Thursday, the unions stated, “It is regrettable that we are compelled to resort to such measures, but the persistent neglect of the welfare of citizens and Nigerian workers and the massive hardship leave us with no choice.”

Effective February 9, the NLC and TUC have given a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to fulfil its part of the understanding reached in October 2023.

The statement noted that it was urgent to handle the issue, pointing out how important it is to uphold the rights and dignity of Nigerian citizens and workers.

One of the unmet promises cited by the labor unions is the implementation of N35,000 wage award for civil servants, which, according to the unions, has not been fulfilled as of the present date.

The unions said they are committed to taking further action if the government fails to address their concerns within the stipulated timeframe.
