The Labour Party in the South-East has stated that the party cannot be lured into a merger or coalition, News About Nigeria reports.

The National Vice Chairman, South-East, of the LP, Innocent Okeke, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen, stating that the doors of the Party are wide open to any person or group of persons who wants to join the Labour Party to achieve their political aims.

He noted that there was nothing wrong with some people doing political calculations and hoping how to achieve them, adding that if some persons are thinking of how to wrestle power come 2027, they are at liberty to do so.

Reacting to the rumours that the 2023 presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi, will exit the party like the former Director General of Peter Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organisation, Doyin Okupe who tendered a resignation a few days ago, Okeke maintained that it was false and would never happen.

He maintained that the political branding of Obi has hit the rooftop, adding that he is more known today in the Labour Party than anywhere else.

He further disclosed that Okupe left the party because it no longer suited his style of politics and others with like minds, followed suit.

“Doyin Okupe said he resigned from the Labour Party, citing ideological differences. We should understand that today, the Labour Party is the only political party in Nigeria with a social democratic ideology,” he said.

He also stated that should Obi decide to run for the top Nigerian position come 2027, he will be warmly considered.

He maintained that Peter Obi has immensely helped to develop the Labour Party into the brand it is today, stating that Obi discovered that the Labour Party represents and has the same political philosophy as his, and therefore decided to stay.
