The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos state, Philip Aivoji, and some other party chieftains along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, News About Nigeria reports.
The Command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed this, stating that the chairman and others were kidnapped at the Bamboo area, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway inward Lagos, on Thursday.
She assured the people that security personnel are working tirelessly to secure the release of the chairman and other victims, adding that the identities of the victims are still unknown.
“Our men rescued some of the victims and are making efforts to reunite the others with their families,” she said.
The PDP Chairman was reportedly kidnapped alongside other party members who were with him on their way back from the party’s Stakeholders’ Zonal Caucus Meeting convened by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and held in Ibadan, the state’s capital.
It was disclosed by sources who pleaded anonymity that the kidnappers are demanding N200 million for the release of the party leaders.
The party’s Publicity Secretary, Hakeem Amode, in a statement on Friday, appealed to the government to secure the release of the party chairman and other victims, and ensure that they return safely.
He lamented the fact that kidnapping is fast becoming a prevalent issue in our country, adding that the government’s inability to address this menace is deeply concerning.
“The abduction of Aivoji underscores the pressing need for decisive actions from the government and stakeholders to eradicate this menace,” he stated.
