The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has strongly condemned the recent attacks in Plateau State, particularly the killings in Kwahaslalek village, Mangu Local Government, News About Nigeria reports.
MURIC labeled the burning of churches and mosques as ‘barbaric and satanic’ in a statement issued by its Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, on Thursday.
The statement condemned the destruction of lives and properties, pointing out the need for peaceful coexistence among residents.
MURIC mentioned that two churches and six mosques were burned, resulting in the loss of eight lives.
The fresh attack in Mangu Local Government by gunmen claimed over 30 lives, mainly women and children, prompting the imposition of a 24-hour curfew by Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang.
The deteriorating security situation led to unrest, the burning of houses, and the destruction of worship centres.
MURIC noted its concern over the consistent attacks on Northern Muslims in Plateau State, adding that despite having both Muslims and Christians living together, it is the Northern Muslims who are targeted for killing.
The group accused security operatives under ‘Operation Rainbow’ of partisanship, claiming that Muslims and their mosques did not receive adequate protection.
The Islamic group urged security agents to be fair and impartial in discharging their duties to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
MURIC also called on residents of Mangu Local Government and Plateau State to cease all forms of hostility, cooperate with law enforcement agencies, and work towards building peace in the region.
The organisation added that the ongoing crisis will hurt the state’s economy, urging a collective effort to restore peace and security.
