The Ogun State Police Command has emphasised the need for drivers in the state to use digital registration for their vehicles, News About Nigeria reports.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Odutola Omolola, gave this charge to drivers in an interview on Tuesday, stating that it is important for the drivers to have a digitalised Central Motor Registry, also known as e-CMR, an information service designed to curb car theft.
She noted that the command will begin to arrest drivers who default on this directive and confiscate their vehicles.
This directive is coming after the command arrested a driver who was caught with a fake registration number along the Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway on Saturday.
She disclosed that a Toyota Venza vehicle had been intercepted during a stop and search by the police operatives, and after an investigation was conducted, it was discovered that the registration number belonged to a different vehicle in Lagos and not the Toyota Venza.
“The driver of the vehicle, Emmanuel Chidera, was said to have claimed that the registration of the vehicle was perfected somewhere in Mushin, contrary to the vehicle’s registration details,” she added.
Omolola, however, urged motorists in the state to ensure they get the new e-CMR, warning that failure to do so would lead to the confiscation of their vehicles by the police.
She further stated that driving vehicles that have not been registered or have DLA plates will no longer be tolerated by the command and will be compounded until proper licensing is verified with evidence.
