Delta State Celebrates 33 Years Of Existence

The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved judgement on the appeals by the All Progressives Congress (APC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Labour Party and their candidates in the Delta state governorship election against Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

During their sitting today, the five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Inyang Okoro, accepted the appeals by all the parties after they had adopted their final briefs of argument.

News About Nigeria recalls that a three-member panel of the court of appeal sitting in Lagos State, led by Justice C.H. Ahuchaogu, in their judgement affirmed the election of Oborevwori as the governor of Delta State.

The appellate court also dismissed the appeals by all the governorship candidates and their parties.

In the result of the election declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Delta state governor polled 360,234 votes to defeat his closest opponent, Ovie Omo-Agege of the APC, who scored 240,229.

In their appeal to the Supreme Court, the appellants prayed to the apex court to invalidate the November 24 judgement of the Court of Appeal in Lagos State, which dismissed their case because it lacked merit.

Similarly, the apex court also reserved judgement on the appeal by the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang.

Recall that a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal led by Justice Elphreda Williams-Dawodu had declared Nentawe Goshwe of the All Progressives Congress the winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state.

The appellate court also ordered INEC to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Mutfwang and issue a fresh one to Goshwe.
