Retired Navy Admiral Asks Govt To Blow Up Vessels, Crew Involved In Crude Oil Theft

A retired admiral from the Nigerian Navy with extensive experience in managing the maritime sector has called on the government to take drastic measures to combat crude oil theft in the country, News About Nigeria reports.

The retired officer, who witnessed the impunity with which oil thieves operate, suggests that the government, under the leadership of Ahmed Bola Tinubu, should direct the military to take decisive action against vessels involved in oil theft.

The retired Admiral proposes a stringent approach, stating, “Direct the military to blow up any ship used in stealing our crude oil, sink the ship with its crew, do so two or three times, and see if crude oil theft will not be a thing of the past in Nigeria.”

He said that the need for strong political will to address the issue is important, pointing out that top politicians, government agencies, and security agents are allegedly involved in the illicit business.

The retired officer expresses concern about the high losses incurred due to crude oil theft, citing the Senate’s disclosure that Nigeria lost N2.3 trillion to this menace in 2023 alone.

Describing oil as Nigeria’s lifeblood, he said that the government must take decisive action against those engaging in oil theft to safeguard the nation’s resources.

The retired admiral identifies key players involved in crude oil theft, including the judiciary, banks, legislators (both serving and retired), Nigerian companies, and security agencies.

He advocates a bold approach by declaring illegal oil bunkering activities a war against Nigeria and empowering security agencies to attack and destroy vessels engaged in such activities.

“If I had my way, we should empower security agencies to attack and destroy any vessel…capable of floating and being used for transportation of any contraband, any crude oil, anything concerning our mineral resources,” he said.
