Following the suspension of accreditation of degree certificates obtained from Benin Republic and Togo by the Federal Government, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Benin Republic, Ugochukwu Favour, has called for the arrest of Umar Audu, the undercover investigative journalist who exposed how many Nigerians use illegal means to obtain their certificates from these countries.
The student leader made the call during an interview on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily.
According to Favour, the undercover investigative journalist should be arrested because, through his report, he is not just questioning the credibility of government agencies involved, like the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), but also implicating them.
In his own words, “He has to be arrested. This guy needs to be arrested because, I know, he’s a reporter who is trying to clear out some things but on that note, you are trying to implicate some persons now because, in a sense, you’re trying to implicate the government, the NYSC and the immigration.”
Favour also queried the reporter, saying that he was able to stamp his passport and also obtained his certificates without being physically present.
He also noted that he was wrong for enrolling for NYSC again in 2023 after he had served in 2019.
He therefore called on the federal government to thoroughly investigate the matter as swiftly as possible to avoid involving innocent Nigerian students in the saga.
News About Nigeria had reported that the Federal Government on Tuesday through the Federal Ministry of Education announced the suspension of accreditation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo.
The suspension came after an investigative report by the Daily Nigerian Newspaper titled “How Daily Nigerian reporter bagged Cotonou varsity degree in 6 weeks,” which shows how the reporter was able to get a degree certificate within 6 weeks in Cotonou, a major city in the Benin Republic and also enrol for the one-year mandatory NYSC Scheme.
