Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has debunked the report that he banned the sale of alcohol in the state, News About Nigeria reports.
The governor stated that the report circulating on social media about the alcohol ban in nine local government areas of the state, including Suleja, was false.
The report claimed that Governor Bago, through the state’s Liquor and Licencing Board, prohibited the sale of alcohol in nine LGAs of the state.
However, the governor maintained that he had been busy initiating and overseeing many people-centered projects across the state and therefore lacked the time to issue such a directive.
According to the state governor, the liquor and licencing board is yet to be constituted by the governor, adding that there is no way a directive of this kind can come from a board that is yet to be formed.
He further noted that he had directed security agents to arrest the imposter posing as a self-appointed secretary of the board, who has been identified as Mohammed Ibrahim, adding that he would get to the bottom of the issue and also discover the reason behind the pronouncement of the acclaimed secretary.
He, therefore, urged the people, including members of the media, to pay no attention to any of such pronouncements and to, henceforth, ensure they seek clarification from known government officials who are authorised to speak for the state and government, rather than just following and going with what anyone says on the social media.
According to him, social media has made it easy for people to spread lies.
