The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has disclosed that there is an increase in the cost of waste evacuation, noting that the new price will take effect in January 2024, News About Nigeria reports.
The notice of the newly approved tariff indicates that the new price is double the former price, and residents will be expected to pay in full before their waste can be evacuated.
According to the Waste Management Authority, they have struggled to manage the cost of evacuating and managing waste while trying to minimise any increase in price for the customers.
They noted that they are also feeling the effects of the economic downturn, which has resulted in constant inflation of prices, including the prices of truck maintenance, diesel, and cost of living, among others.
They maintained that, as a result, it has become inevitable to review the waste tariff as the efforts the authority is making to ensure that there is improved efficiency, productivity, and good service delivery continue to be outrun by the rising cost of service.
Recall that the Waste Management Authority had earlier on in September 2022, increased the cost of evacuating waste, blaming it on the increase in the price of fuel.
Residents of Lagos State are, however, not finding the increase in cost funny and have protested it, maintaining that it will add to the economic hardships they are already suffering from.
According to them, the last time the fee was increased, there was no corresponding service from the Management Authority.
