The Federal Government has officially reopened the Third Mainland Bridge, marking the end of a one-month closure for maintenance and repair work, News About Nigeria reports.
The reopening was announced by Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, in a statement on Thursday.
Osiyemi expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their patience during the temporary closure, acknowledging the inconveniences it might have caused.
He said that the reopening demonstrates the government’s commitment to infrastructure maintenance and public safety.
Osiyemi said; “We are pleased to announce that parts of the Third Mainland Bridge which were closed last month will reopen today 21st December, 2023 by 6 pm.
“Following essential maintenance, the entire bridge is now fully accessible to the public, ensuring smoother connectivity and safe commuting.”
We appreciate your patience during the temporary closure and understand the inconvenience it may have caused,” he added.
The closure, which began on November 1, focused on repairing two ramps of the Third Mainland Bridge connecting Oworoshoki to Adekunle and Lagos-Island (Adeniji Adele) to Adekunle.
The maintenance work was aimed at ensuring the safety and smooth connectivity of the entire bridge.
Motorists are now free to use the Third Mainland Bridge, and the government encourages cooperation with traffic management officials, urging compliance with diversions and the use of alternative routes as needed.
The Third Mainland Bridge, stretching nearly 12 kilometres (7.5 miles), serves as a vital link between Lagos Island, the city’s business hub, and the mainland, where the majority of the population resides.
It was built in 1990 in Nigeria’s economic engine.
