As the world marks International Human Solidarity Day, Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, has called on Nigerians to break down the walls of ethnic and religious divisions hindering the nation’s unity and progress.
News About Nigeria gathered that in a series of tweets on his official X handle on Wednesday, Obi said that it is important to foster unity in diversity and promote international cooperation for global development.
Obi tweeted, “On the national level, Nigerians need to solemnly remind ourselves of the need to tear down the walls of ethnic and religious divisions that have continued to divide us and instead emphasize our unity and leverage our diverse and rich cultural and ethnic identities and strengths to advance our national progress.”
The former governor of Anambra State expressed worry that Nigeria has become increasingly divided as a result of ‘bad politics and elite insensitivity’, making it difficult for citizens to work together for the country’s progress.
Obi continued, “Unfortunately, we have, today as a nation, become more sharply divided than ever. Our dear nation is more polarised today than it has ever been, fueled by overwhelming tribal and religious sentiments among the people resulting in the unwillingness of Nigerians to cooperate and work together towards achieving national growth and development. This is clearly the result of bad politics and elite insensitivity.”
Peter Obi urged a united front against the nation’s challenges, pointing out that problems like hunger, poverty, and inequality transcend racial and religious boundaries.
He urged political leaders and citizens to prioritise unity, social justice, and social equality to address the various challenges facing Nigeria.
