NCoS Commends Officers for Zero Jail Attacks in 2023

The Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Haliru Nababa, has expressed appreciation for the dedication of officers and men in ensuring zero jail attacks within custodial centres across the country throughout the year 2023.

News About Nigeria gathered that this praise follows a stop to the jail attack trend that has afflicted Nigeria in recent years.

Speaking at the end-of-year party and award night for NCoS officers and personnel in Abuja on Friday, Nababa attributed the positive shift to the renewed commitment and diligence of the service’s personnel.

The Controller General said that the service is committed to safeguarding all custodial institutions and rehabilitating offenders nationally.

“This year will remain memorable for the service as we strive to meet our general mandates of ensuring water-tight security in and around correctional facilities. This also includes ensuring that inmates are properly rehabilitated and reformed for proper reintegration,” stated Nababa during the event.

He said that it is important to foster an efficient and sustainable system that contributes to improving public safety and national security.

“As a service, we are committed to fostering a system that is efficient and sustainable towards improving public safety and national security in general. In order to achieve this, the officers and men who form the fulcrum of our human resources are paramount. Hence, we are committed towards improving their capacity as well as their welfare,” he added.

The Controller General noted that the occasion was not only a celebration of the hard work put in by the officers and men in 2023 but also a preparation for the challenges and responsibilities that lie ahead in 2024.

He expressed the service’s continuous commitment to recogniaing and rewarding personnel who displayed excellence, hard work, and diligence.

In response to high-profile attacks on custodial centres in 2021 and 2022, the then Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, had assured the government’s commitment to enhancing security in custodial facilities.

This included plans to institute military bases, police, and other armed agency stations around all custodial facilities to counter threats from within and outside.
