The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied allegations that it paid a ransom to free prospective corps members who were kidnapped in Zamfara State, News About Nigeria gathered.
In a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, on Thursday, the management clarified that the release of four out of the eight abducted corps members resulted from the combined efforts of the NYSC and security agents.
Contrary to some media reports indicating ransom payments by state governments, individuals, or agencies, the NYSC stated, “No state government, individual, or agency paid any amount in the guise of ransom before their release.”
The statement added that responsibility for the medical bills of the released corps members is being shouldered by the NYSC.
Megwa said that the management and security personnel of NYSC is dedicated to obtaining the release of the remaining kidnapped potential corps members without the need for a ransom.
He issued a warning to the public, especially the parents of the remaining kidnapped corps members, about fraudulent schemes that pretend to secure the release of their loved ones by requesting financial donations.
In a statement, the NYSC warned the public, parents, and family members to be wary of dishonest people who may try to take advantage of the situation to scam people, pointing out that different account numbers and identities have been spreading in public pleas for financial contributions.
To guarantee the safety of all corps members across the country, the NYSC reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and security of its members and its continued cooperation with law enforcement.
