The Public Relations Officer of NSCDC, Okadigbo Edwin, who disclosed this in a statement on Friday, stated that the suspects specialise in vandalising armoured cables and other electrical installations in and around the Awka metropolis.

Speaking on behalf of the commandant, Edwin Osuala, Okadigbo noted that the suspects were apprehended after the Corps received an intelligence report on Monday morning.

He said that a concerned citizen had alerted the force after he made a report of seeing a group making away with armoured cables from an electrical installation behind Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka in the early hours of Monday morning.

He further commended the swift response of the operatives of the command upon getting the information, which led to the arrest of four of the suspects, with one escaping.

The suspects arrested are; Monday Chukwu ‘m’ aged 37, of Ntezi Ebonyi State, Okwudiri Nnaji ‘m’ aged 29 of Idodo Nkanu East Enugu State, Agu Ikechukwu ‘m’ aged 20 from Ehamufu Isiuzo LGA Enugu State and Chinecherem Idoho ‘m’ from Uboloafor Udenu LGA Enugu State.

The suspects, upon interrogation, confessed to committing the crime, adding that they used a handsaw and cutter to severe and strip the electric cables before selling the items as scrap.

The state command has, however, ordered an in-depth investigation into the matter while urging the Investigation and Intelligence Department to ensure that the fleeing suspect is apprehended and they all face the wrath of the law.
