2023 Election: NNPP Won Kano Through Corruption, Doguwa Alleges

The Member of the House representing Tudun Wada/Doguwa Federal Constituency of Kano State, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has alleged that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) won the Kano State 2023 polls through ‘corrupt means.’

Doguwa, the immediate past Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, made this claim during a brief interactive session with journalists on Wednesday, asserting that irregularities marred the election.

According to the APC chieftain, the courts only exposed NNPP’s corruption in the 2023 elections.

News About Nigeria recalls that the NNPP had won Kano State in the February 25, 2023, presidential election, and the party also secured major seats in the National Assembly and Kano State Assembly.

Additionally, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the NNPP gubernatorial candidate, Abba Kabir Yusuf, as the winner of the March 18 gubernatorial election.

However, in September, the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Kano State dismissed the INEC declaration following the petition of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir Gawuna.

The APC candidate, in his petition, sought the nullification of the NNPP victory on the grounds of alleged irregularities.

In their judgment, the tribunal subtracted 165,663 votes from the total vote of Yusuf of the NNPP as invalid votes, arguing that the affected ballot papers were not stamped or signed, hence invalid.

Despite Yusuf’s appeal against the judgment, the Appeal Court concurred with the ruling of the Tribunal in Kano, citing that the fielding of Abba Yusuf disagreed with the Electoral Law, as he was not qualified to contest that election.
